May 2—The Creston News Advertiser won two, first-place awards in the Iowa Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Contest.

Awards were presented during a ceremony Thursday, April 28, in Des Moines.

The editorial staff won first place in the daily class 1 division for the 2021 Progress section. The staff of Caleb Nelson, former reporters Sarah Scull, Keri Anderson and Regina Smith were noted for their work under the theme of childhood memories. Nelson is editor of the Adair County Free Press and Fontanelle Observer and contributes to the Creston News Advertiser.

Scull received a first-place award in "best personality feature" about the artwork of Blake and Bailey Fry-Schnormeier. Scull earned third place for "A final wish fulfilled: 'Forever Eagles fans' leave gift for their community." The story was about Afton couple Judy Chastain and her husband Joe, who both died of COVID one day apart in August 2020. A statue of an eagle was placed in their honor at East Union's softball field where they watched grandchildren play.

Scull's third place in "best news feature" was the support Jonathan Graham received in Creston while living homeless.

Nelson received second place for coverage of education for the Adair County Free Press, a newspaper in the weekly class 1 division.
