Crews across North Georgia pretreating roads ahead of potential wintry weather

As a mix of winter weather moves into North Georgia over the weekend, the areas most at risk for icing on roads are rural, mountainous counties.

On Friday, Channel 2′s Tom Regan went to Pickens County where he found crews fanned out on steep mountain roads, laying a brine solution to help prevent the roads from freezing up.

“We are taking a preemptive strike, trying to pretreat roads on the high elevations to make sure if we do get something we are staying ahead of the game,” Pickens County Commissioner Kris Stancil said.

Stancil told Regan that road crews will be on standby this weekend and will respond as needed to treacherous road conditions.

The Georgia Department of Transportation said it is not pretreating state roads and interstates but is closely watching the forecast and will adjust plans as necessary.

Many residents in Pickens County also said they are ready for whatever winter weather comes their way.

“Went to the store, getting gas. we got our generator. We got out firewood, so we can build a fire if it gets cold. So yeah, we’re set,” Nicole Tucker said.
