Crews battle two-alarm apartment fire in west Lubbock

Several units were damaged and multiple people were displaced after a two-alarm fire Friday afternoon at a west Lubbock apartment complex.

The fire was reported just before 1 p.m. at the Branchwater Apartments on 4th Street near West Loop 289, according to Lubbock Fire Rescue. Crews remain at the scene shortly before 4 p.m., with firefighters continuing to battle the blaze with a ladder truck. Traffic on eastbound 4th Street was blocked for much of the afternoon.

Initial reports indicate the blaze initially involved a second-floor apartment and spread to the attic and nearby chimney. Several units sustained fire, smoke and water damage - with a portion of an apartment building's roof collapsing - although the full extent of the damage was not immediately clear.

The South Plains Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to provide assistance to residents who were displaced.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
