Crews battle grass fire in Wheeler County near Shamrock

The Texas A&M Forest Service (TAMFS) responded Friday afternoon to the Red Fork Fire in Wheeler County near Shamrock off of the interstate, now estimated at 1,024 acres and 95 percent contained. The fire was just off of County Road X, and TAMFS said forward progression had been stopped.

Among other incidents, a fire near the north side of Amarillo called the Roasted Willow fire was an estimated 52 acres and 100 percent contained, and the River Bottom fire northeast of Borger was 43 acres and 85 percent contained.

"Dozers are working to widen and improve containment lines. Firefighters are patrolling the fire area and checking for heat near the perimeter," TAMFS said via Twitter on Friday for the Wheeler County fire.

According to the Wheeler County Sheriff's Office via social media, the large grass fire was approximately 1.5 miles north of I-40 at the intersection of CR X and CR 9: "Shamrock Fire, McLean Fire, Samnorwood Fire, Shamrock EMS, Wheeler County Sheriff's Office and Wheeler County hands are all on scene. Avoid the area and watch for emergency vehicles in the area. Additional departments paged: Wheeler Fire, Mobeetie Fire, Allison Fire, Kelton Fire, Briscoe Fire, Hoover Fire and Lefors Fire."
