Nearly 2,000 gallons of sewage spills into part of Gwinnett County river

Crews worked to clean up a sewage spill in Gwinnett County on Tuesday.

According to the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources, the spill occurred at a utility hole on Rivershyre Circle in Lawrenceville.

Crews were notified of the spill at 11:51 a.m., and the overflow was stopped at 1:14 p.m.

DWR said the spill was 1,876 gallons in volume and entered an unnamed tributary of the Yellow River.

To mitigate the spill’s effects, DWR raked the area, spread lime and put up signs that alert residents of the spill.

Some products labeled ‘flushable’ do not disperse or break apart once in the sanitary sewer system.

According to DWR, these non-dispersible items can cause blockages as they collect in the sewer pipe, leading to sanitary backups or overflows.
