HAMBURG — Crews prevented a fire from spreading to a historic Hamburg church on Wednesday morning.

At 3:28 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, the Hamburg Township Public Safety Department were dispatched to a reported building fire in the Hamburg Road and Stone Street in Hamburg. While en route, firefighters were told the fire had possibly spread to the rear of St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 10585 Hamburg Road, in Hamburg. The church was built in 1844 and is listed as a Michigan State Historical Site.

The on-duty fire crew from Hamburg Township Fire Station 12, located on M-36 near Hamburg Road, arrived on scene with six minutes of being dispatched — according to a news release shared to the department's Facebook page on Wednesday. The crew found a well-involved fire consuming an outbuilding located near the church.

The on-duty crew from Hamburg Township Fire Station 11, located at M-36 and Pettysville Road, arrived four minutes later. Firefighters extinguished the fire and prevented it from spreading to the church, according to the release.

Hamburg Township Public Safety Director Rick Duffany complimented the fire crews for their quick response and efforts. Duffany added this incident highlights the benefit of staffing both Hamburg Township fire stations 24 hours a day — allowing the department to handle multiple calls. It has been a point of emphasis for the department over the past year, according to the release.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to Hamburg Township Public Safety. The Green Oak Township Fire Department and Livingston County EMS assisted Hamburg Township firefighters at the scene.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church released the following statement on its Facebook page: “The people of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church are eternally grateful to the Hamburg Township Public Safety Department for their swift and skilled response to a structure fire behind our Church building. The Church building has very minimal damage. It could have been so much worse.”
