Sep. 15—A sinkhole that opened up in the middle of an Aiken shopping center last month is getting repaired.

Crews spent Thursday morning moving dirt to fix the sinkhole located in front of American Freight, a furniture store located in Kalmia Plaza shopping center off Richland Avenue.

The sinkhole first appeared in August.

Caution tape and safety cones still surround the sinkhole, which is 7 to 8 feet deep and around 7 to 10 feet wide.

Ollie's Bargain Outlet, Rose's Hibbett Sports, Food Lion and Books-A-Million are some of the other tenants in the shopping center.

The last sinkhole reported in Aiken County was in 2020 on South Boundary Avenue and 2019 on Atomic Road.

The shopping center is owned by Vishal Kalmia Plaza LLC, located in Norcross, Georgia, according to Aiken County property records.
