Crews respond to auto garage blaze in southern Berks

Sep. 24—Crews rushed to the scene of a fully involved auto garage fire at 12 Formstone Drive in Robeson Township Friday afternoon.

Flames had reportedly engulfed the structure when crews began arriving at the scene around 3:40 p.m.

The garage is on a small back road off Cedar Hill Road.

The property belongs to Formstone Crafters of Reading, a contract truck hauling company, but the affected structure was leased out to another party, said Tommy Favinger, deputy fire chief with Gibraltar Fire Company, which serves Robeson Township.

Cedar Hill Road was reportedly closed around 4 p.m.

Manpower was limited during the operation, and responding crews requested additional engines from multiple fire companies, including those from Chester and Montgomery counties, according to reports.

Crews reported there was water on the fire and they were making progress around 4:15 p.m.

Favinger said strong winds posed a challenge, as well as difficulties getting water to the scene.

"We laid 1,500 feet of (hose) up the road," Favinger said.

The fire was under control about 45 minutes to an hour after crews arrived, but the crews had to do an extensive inspection for smoldering remains, Favinger said.

The fire was entirely contained around 6 p.m., according to Favinger.

A cause and damage estimate for the fire were not available Friday night.
