Retired firefighter alerts sleeping couple to their burning home in Weston

Firefighters in Weston are on the scene of a large house fire at a house on South Avenue.

Route 30, which is South Avenue, is closed between Brown Street and Winter Street because of that three-alarm fire, according to the Weston Fire Department.

The call came in at 8:00 a.m. from a passerby who saw the flames shooting from their back deck.

Then, a retired firefighter who lives nearby ran to the home and banged on the door, alerting two people who were inside. The husband and wife who were alerted to the fire got out safely.

“My wife woke me up and said what’s happening, someone is knocking hard,” said Nagy Mikel. “I ran out of the bedroom and the far room of the house walking by a portion of the deck was all on fire.”

Weston Fire Chief David Soar says a fire started outside, in the back of the home—which is why the smoke alarms didn’t go off. The flames quickly spread.

The couple had lived in their home for more than 35 years and had recently renovated their kitcheN and now it’s all gone.

“Things in life can go in a flash,” said Mikel. “But thank God we are alive. My wife is shocked of course, I don’t blame her cause we have beautiful memories here, now everything is gone, but we are alive.”

Chief Soar says the home is a total loss. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
