Body found at East Main Street Plaza in Webster

WEBSTER - Authorities are investigating the death of a man whose body was found at East Main Street Plaza early Friday.

Police spent several hours at the shopping center, with many of its stores remaining closed for the morning.

The man, in his late 30s, was initially thought to be sleeping at the plaza, authorities said. Webster police received a report at 2:45 a.m. Officers responded to the plaza.

A crime scene was soon set up, with state police called in. The Office of the State Medical Examiner is involved.

Authorities are offering few details about the case, saying the investigation is in the early stages.

"They are currently conducting an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death," said Worcester District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. He spoke at a mid-afternoon news conference at the plaza.

Asked by a reporter if foul play is involved, Early said it appears to be the case.

Businesses at the shopping center include include Big Lots!, Planet Fitness and Aubuchon Hardware.

Webster and state police were on scene, with sections of the plaza blocked by police vehicles and crime scene tape. Investigators seemed to be focusing on Aubuchon Hardware.
