In Crimea, a high level of "terrorist threat" was announced until 24 August

In Russian-occupied Crimea, a high (yellow) level of terrorist threat was announced, to remain in effect until the Independence Day of Ukraine.

Details: Aksyonov said that there will be a high (yellow) level of terrorist danger in a range of districts and at strategic targets in Crimea from 9 August until 24 August.

In particular, from 20:00 Tuesday, 9 August until Wednesday, 24 August, this threat level will be in effect:

  • in the municipal districts of Armiansk, Dzhankoi, Krasnoperekopsk and the Dzhankoi and Krasnoperekopsk districts;

  • at targets belonging to the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Housing and Communal Services, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Energy and Fuel, Ministry of Industrial Policy and the State Committee of Water Management and Melioration.

Aksyonov stressed that these measures have been taken in order to ensure the safety and protection against terrorism of Crimea and its residents.

"This measure is exclusively preventive, since the situation in the region is fully under the control of state and local authorities",  he added.

Background:

  • On the afternoon of 9 August, explosions rocked the military airbase in Novofedorivka, in the Saky district of Russian-occupied Crimea. Sergey Aksyonov, the so-called and Russian-appointed "head of Crimea" reported that one person had been killed and six injured.

  • The Russian Defence Ministry claimed that no-one fired on the Saky airfield in Crimea, but that, for some reason, there was a detonation of ammunition. Later on, a source in the Russian Ministry of Defence told TASS that the explosions were caused by a "fire safety violation".

  • The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine has said it was not aware of what caused the explosions and the subsequent fire at the Saky airfield near Novofedorivka.

  • The New York Times quoted a "senior Ukrainian military official with knowledge of the situation" who said that Ukrainian forces were behind the blast at the air base.

  • Mykhailo Podoliak, Senior Adviser to Ukrainian President, said that Kyiv was not involved in the explosions at the airfield in Novofedorivka but added that Ukrainian partisans might be behind the blast.
