Criminal investigation follows fire at Manistique business

MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WJMN) – Authorities in Manistique have identified individuals of interest in relation to a fire that caused nearly $100,000 in damage.

According to the Manistique Public Safety Department, reports of a fire at U.P. Paper LLC were called in around 3 p.m. on Friday, February 9. When authorities arrived, they saw fire burning through one of five storage areas on the property.

Burning inside the storage area was compressed bales of recycled cardboard and other items. An estimated 1,200 bales of recycled materials, weighing 1,100 pounds each were destroyed. The approximate cost of the damage is close to $100,000.

Numerous local fire departments aided in the 18-hour effort to control the flames.

No injuries were reported from the fire.

Manistique Public Safety Department reports there is a criminal investigation underway to determine the cause of the fire. While individuals of interest have been identified, no names or further details will be released by authorities while the investigation continues. Authorities did clarify that no one employed by U.P. Paper LLC are suspected of any wrongdoing in the incident. The suspects are not known to have any affiliation with the company or any of its employees.
