Crock-Pot Recalls More Than 940,000 Multi-Cookers

Sunbeam has recalled more than 940,000 Crock-Pot 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cookers. If not fully locked, the lid can detach during cooking, causing burn hazards. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Sunbeam has received 119 reports of lids detaching, resulting in 99 burn injuries ranging in severity from first-degree to third-degree burns, the most serious.
The Crock-Pot 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cooker was part of Consumer Reports’ tests of multi-cookers, but we did not encounter this problem during testing.
On its website, Crock-Pot says that three common mistakes can cause the lid to detach, including:
• Exceeding the fill line when cooking with liquid ingredients
• Failing to properly engage the lid’s lock mechanism before starting the unit
• Improperly using the quick-release valve
In response, the company says it has redesigned the lid and developed more explicit instructions printed on both the unit and in the owner’s manual. Owners of the current model can get a replacement lid. (See the details below.)
Crock-Pot Recall Details
The recall: The recall involves 942,760 models of the Crock-Pot 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cookers sold in the U.S. and Canada. The model number is SCCPPC600-V1; it’s shown on the label on the bottom. The multi-cookers were manufactured between July 1, 2017, and Oct. 1, 2018, with date codes K196JN through K365JN and L001JN through L273JN. (You’ll find the date code engraved on one of the prongs of the electrical plug and on the bottom of the base.)
The risk: The recalled Crock-Pot multi-cooker can pressurize when the lid is not fully locked. This can cause the lid to suddenly detach while the product is in use, posing burn risks to consumers from hot food and liquids ejecting from the cooker.
Incidents/injuries: Sunbeam Products has received 119 reports of lid detachment, resulting in 99 burn injuries ranging in severity from first-degree to third-degree burns.
Where and when sold: The multi-cookers were sold at Walmart, Target, and other retail stores nationwide and online at Amazon and other retailers from July 2017 through November 2020 for between $70 and $100.
The remedy: Consumers should stop using the Crock-Pot in pressure cooker mode but can continue to use it for slow cooking and sautéing. Consumers who continue using the multi-cooker in pressure cooker mode while waiting for the replacement lid should be certain the lid is securely turned to the fully locked position by aligning the arrow on the lid with the lock symbol on the base.
