Crocker Art Museum and The Sofia are temporarily among newest coronavirus closures

Add two of Sacramento’s most popular cultural institutions to the list of places closing their doors in response to the ongoing effort to slow the spread of the new coronavirus.

Starting Tuesday, the Crocker Art Museum in downtown and The Sofia Tsakopoulos Center for the Arts, home of B Street Theatre, announced Monday they will be temporarily closing in a “proactive measure” to protect public health.

“All programs, tours, classes, and events through March 31 have been postponed or canceled in a proactive measure to preserve the health and well-being of our visitors and staff and to support the city of Sacramento’s ongoing efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19,” the museum said in a news release.

The museum encouraged ticket holders for events to contact customer service at customerservice@crockerart.org and a staff member would get in touch.

During its closure, the Crocker will offer content through its social media platforms, posting “relaxing and engaging content” along with videos.

The Sofia also canceled all of its upcoming programming, including its mainstage production of “Byhalia, Mississippi,” Family Series production of “A Year With Frog and Toad” and all shows in its Upstairs at the B series. Shows from the Sacramento Ballet, Sacramento Master Singers and SBL Entertainment are also canceled.

“Like all other venues where the public gathers, we will be closing for a while,” the venue said in a news release. “Since the duration of the closure is uncertain, we are taking serious measures including cancellations of shows, postponement of others and, most painfully, significant reductions in staff.”

“We are all confident better days will return and when they do, we’ll enjoy seeing each of you out and about dining, shopping and attending all the fabulous arts and entertainment options in Sacramento,” the theater said.
