Cross Country: Fearsome foursome leads CMCS
Sep. 23—RENVILLE — The Central Minnesota Christian School girls' cross-country put on a show on Thursday evening on a nearly perfect day.
The CMCS Bluejays took the top four individual spots to win the MACCRAY/RCW Invitational.
The Wabasso Rabbits were second with 48 points. Lakeview took third with 50 in ideal conditions that included temperatures in the low 60s with cloud cover at Stoney Creek Golf Course.
"The girls have been working hard and I'm excited about where they can go," CMCS head coach Becky Graves said. "We came into today with perfect weather and a nice, flat course. The conditions were right and the girls were ready. ... They really encourage each other and work well together."
Bluejays sophomore Sidney Duininck crossed the finish line first with a personal best time of 20 minutes, 57 seconds.
The first-place finish comes as a first for Duininck, who is a sophomore in her third year on the team. She finished 45 seconds in front of her teammate, eighth-grader Annaliese Wood, who placed second with a time of 21:42.
"I feel very accomplished and happy. I saw that not many people were behind me, so I was just trying to make that gap bigger," Duininck said. "I knew the weather was going to be nice. I prepared myself to work really hard for this."
CMCS' success did not stop at Duininck and Wood. The next two racers to cross the finish line also donned all-blue racing uniforms.
Bluejays senior Abby Timmer finished third in 22:24 and freshman Maggie Setrum finished fourth with a time of 22:32.
"That was so amazing," Duininck said of some of her Bluejays teammates finishing right behind her. "My teammates are improving so much and we have a good future for our team. I'm really happy that we all did so well."
Two other area girls finished in the top 10. Yellow Medicine East senior Sanjana Pullan took fifth with a time of 22:45 and BOLD/Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart's Kenna Henriksen finished in ninth in 23:32.
As for the boys race, Ortonville saw three runners finish in the top 10, winning with a 39 team score. Following the Trojans were Lakeview, with 42 points, MACCRAY/RCW with 66 and Wabasso with 69.
Lakeview senior Ethan Schwankl took home the individual victory in 17:49.
Four area boys finished in the top 10. MACCRAY/RCW's Ivan Barrera led the pack with a second-place comeback finish in 17:57. He passed BOLD/BLHS' Niko Garcia by one second.
"At the start, I was in second. I just wanted to finish second the whole race. I actually wanted first but Ethan was way too far ahead," Barrera said. "When I saw the final stretch, I told myself, 'I got to push it, I got to push it. I need second.'"
Barrera's time came as a personal-best in his first and final cross-country season as he is a senior. He also plays defensive back and quarterback for MACCRAY's football team.
Rounding out the area top 10 was CMCS' Timothy Brouwer in fifth in 18:21 and BOLD/BLHS' Daniel Frank, who finished eighth with a time of 18:56.

The Willmar girls edged Alexandria 49-51 to win the title at the Rocori Invitational.
The meet was held at Oak Hill Golf Course in Cold Spring.
Willmar's Lauren Eilers took first place with a time of 19 minutes, 4.1 seconds on the 5,000-meter course. Alexandria's Citori Hable took second in 19:21.4.
Eilers was followed by Hannah Quinn's seventh-place finish, Sophia Negen's 11th-place showing, Erin Eilers' 16th-place finish and Madi Engstrom's 22nd-place showing.
In the boys' race, Big Lake took first with 36 points, beating Fergus Falls' 97. Willmar took ninth with a 213.
Big Lake's Owen Layton took first in 15:45.6. Willmar's Sully Anez finished third in 16:06.2.

The Litchfield girls and St. James' boys took home championships at the Caty Delwiche Invitational run at Glencoe-Silver Lake High School.
The Dragons girls scored 89 points to beat second-place Sibley East, which had 119. Litchfield's Kala Ziegler led the way, finishing 11th overall with a time of 21 minutes, 50.7 seconds.
Elsa Helstrom was 12th in 21:55.5. All five Litchfield runners finished in the top 25.
The overall girls champion was Isabelle Schmitz, who timed in at 18:12.6.
St. James scored 52 points to beat second-place Litchfield, which had 110.
Litchfield's Ole Rogness took eighth overall in 18:02.8.
The boys' winner was Josiah DeMaris of Madelia/Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther. He had a time of 16:38.6.

Paynesville/Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa sophomore Madi Wendlandt finished second in the girls' division of the Kimball/Eden Valley-Watkins Invitational at the Kimball Golf Course.
Wendlandt finished the 5,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 25.89 seconds to finish behind Morris/Chokio-Alberta's Hailey Werk, who had a time of 20.19.86.
The Sauk Centre boys and EVW/K girls took home team titles.
The Mainstreeters' Brandon Kampsen helped lead Sauk Centre by winning the individual title in 15:58.95. Sauk Centre had 25 points to Morris/CA's 70. Paynesville/BBE was fourth with 85 points. Kaden Pieper led the way for Paynesville/BBE with a time of 20:03.90, good for 11th place.
EVW/K's girls had 43 points. Hinckley-Finlayson took second with 61. Paynesville/BBE was sixth with 109 points.
