Cross Country: Jefferson girls, Huron boys rule Huron League jamboree

The girls didn’t get to finish their race in the first Huron League cross country jamboree of the season.

Heavy rain and lightning forced race organizers to pull the runners off the course after about two miles.

There was perfect weather Tuesday for the second jamboree at Sterling State Park and Jefferson left no doubt about the best team in the league.

Jenna Pilachowski ran 19:19.8 to win the individual title and lead Jefferson to the team crown.

The Bears had 27 points to 66 for runner-up St. Mary Catholic Central. New Boston Huron was third with 84 followed by Grosse Ile with 103, Milan with 117, Riverview with 150, and Airport with 166.

"Our girls team just has not hit it on all cylinders yet," Jefferson coach Phil Speare said. "We came close to it at our invite, but I always tell our kids the second jamboree is a race of caution that hits us at mid-season and you have to be smart at the start. They were mostly just that, but we still have some nagging issues with a couple girls physically that they’re trying to overcome."

Jefferson also ran 4-7-8-10 with Riley Peer, Madison Duvall, Veronica Fitzgerald, and Kim Miller.

SMCC's Bella LaFountain was stride for stride with Pilachowski for much of the afternoon, but had to settle for second place.

Huron’s Molly Johnston was third, Megan Woelkers of Flat Rock fifth, and Avery Turk of Huron sixth.

SMCC had a nice pack with Alex Wickenheiser, Abby Lechy, Samantha LaFountain, and Claire Lisker finishing 15-16-17-20.

Maggie Warden took 19th for Huron.

Huron’s boys proved their win in the first jamboree was no fluke, finishing with 39 points − 34 better than runner-up Jefferson.

SMCC (91), Riverview (95), Flat Rock (107), Grosse Ile (153), Airport (172), and Milan (180) rounded out the field.

Jefferson’s Carter McCalister was a runaway winner individually, posting a time of 15:44.3 to eclipse the rest of the field by more than 39 seconds.

Huron put five runners in the top 11 as Ryan Morris, Griffin Mentzer, Abdul Ghennewa, Lucas Kuhn, and Luck Dulecki ran 5-6-8-9-11.

Jacob Stanislawski of Flat Rock (third), Simon VanderVlucht of SMCC (fourth), and Brayden Humes of Milan (seventh) all were in the top seven.

Jefferson placed Blake Schroeder 12th, Ben Merkel 18th and Nolan West 19th.

Luke Foster and Max Foldvary of SMCC took 14th and 16th and the Flat Rock duo of Lucas Taraskiewicz and Nate Vargo clocked in at 15 and 17.

Seth Haliburda was 20th for Airport.

Airport Wagar won the boys middle school race with 42 points to 54 for Huron’s Renton.

Renton went 1-2 individually with Kyle Siggett and Cameron Crane.

Individual winner Annabelle Chan led Flat Rock Simpson to the girls crown.

Airport took the to six spots in girls K-sixth grade led by Mila Anderson and Zach Dobbertin of Airport was tops in boys K-6.

Carlson’s Anderson third

NEW BOSTON – Gibraltar Carlson’s Jon Anderson took third place in the Downriver League jamboree at Willow Metropark Tuesday.

The Marauders were fourth in the team standings with 75 points in a meet won by Allen Park with 26.

Carlson also got strong runs from Nathan Lawe (11th), Quinn Burgei (16th), and Blake Fowler (18th).

Carlson’s girls placed Ashley Farnsworth 22nd, Arianna Pate 24th and Rylie Sulewski 25th.

Trinity has champs

WESTLAND – Cole Butler (fourth-sixth boys), Charity Frank-DeRoch (fourth-sixth girls) and Gavin Rohr (junior high boys) all were champions for Trinity Lutheran in the Lutheran High Westland Invitational Friday.

Frank-DeRoch led a sweep of the top six spots for Trinity. She was followed by Lacie Little, Kelsie Sikes, Ava Dowen, Emma Boyd, and Hannah Finley.
