Crosswalk project highlights businesses in Pottsville

Jun. 11—POTTSVILLE — The words "Majestic Theater" stretch across West Arch Street in bright, white paint.

The theater is the first business to be featured in the city's new crosswalk project. Instead of white lines for pedestrians to walk on, nine businesses will have their logos on the streets.

"This is really cool, and it's a really interesting way to add artwork," Lisa Gillespie, the theater's executive director, said Thursday.

The city joined with Lasting Legacy for Pottsville for the project. Lasting Legacy is a nonprofit organization created to improve the quality of life in the city.

Walter R. Davis IV, a board member with Lasting Legacy and originator of the idea, said that the goal is to have all nine crosswalks completed by the end of the year.

For the Majestic, Gillespie said she believes more people will learn about the theater because of the crosswalk.

"You have no idea how many people walk into this theater and say. 'I didn't know this was here,' " she said.

Other proposed crosswalk sites along Centre Street are: Morris Street, West Union Street, Howard Avenue, Mahantongo Street, West Norwegian Street, West Market Street, West Race Street and Laurel Boulevard.
