Crowds Cheer as Pro-Beijing Lawmaker Junius Ho Loses Seat in Elections

Crowds cheered and celebrated in Hong Kong on the night of Sunday, November 24, as a controversial pro-Beijing lawmaker, Junius Ho, lost his seat in local elections, after his hardline stance against pro-democracy protesters in recent months.

Ho lost his seat to Lo Chun-yu of the Democratic Party of Hong Kong in the Lok Tsui constituency of Tuen Mun.

Lo beat the controversial incumbent by nearly 1,200 votes, prompting celebrations within the constituency headquarters when the results were being announced.

Ho attracted attention from protesters when he reportedly shook hands with men in white shirts in July of 2019, on the same night commuters were attacked by men in white shirts.

Ho was also stabbed during a campaign event in early November.

In a statement on Facebook, Ho thanked his supporters and wrote that he was “very moved” that the opposition came “to congratulate me.” Credit: minachan1988 via Storyful
