From Town & Country

Most members of the royal family have a signature accessory: Meghan Markle's is her delicate gold jewelry; Kate is partial to hatbands; and the Queen loves a good brooch.

But Princess Anne's isn't so much of an accessory as a physical trait—her voluminous hair is iconic, and it was quite the process to recreate in this season of The Crown.

"Makeup literally took 10 minutes, but hair, sometimes it would take two hours," said actress Erin Doherty, an up-and-comer, who plays a teenage Anne in this season of the popular Netflix series.

"It's its own beast. Literally, I would sit in the chair, people would come in and go and come in and go, and I sat still in the same place. But it was so necessary for her character because it felt like her hair and her fashion were the way that she was able to express herself in the confined, controlled environment that she grew up in."

While Doherty naturally looks like her character, creating that hair height was quite the process. Hoping to glean some styling tips for the upcoming holiday season, I emailed the show's hair and makeup designer Cate Hall—she's currently off filming the show's forthcoming fourth season—to ask about the process.

"Erin came to us with perfect length and colour hair, but not enough of it," Hall said. "As you know Princess Anne had famously thick hair, with a very natural wavy texture through the '60s and 70s. We created a ‘ladder wig’ which supplements and blends with Erin’s hair beautifully, giving it the kind of volume and texture most of us could only dream of!"

Once the ladder wig was clipped in, Hall explains, then Erin's own hair was threaded through the gaps to blend. "We blow dried mousse into Erin’s hair with a large round brush, then roller set her hair on hot rollers using setting lotion."

And voilà! Over-the-top royal volume.
