When Prince Philip was involved in a car accident earlier this year-and was spotted back out on the road shortly after his Land Rover collided with another vehicle-plenty of people made their feelings about a 97-year-old driving known. But few had the reaction of actor Matt Smith, who played the Queen's husband for two seasons on the Netflix series The Crown, which centers around Elizabeth II's early reign.

"Look, I thought it was amazing in some ways that he was back in the car the next day. Getting back on the horse, that is what he does. Also, I know people in their nineties who drive," he told the British edition of GQ.

"But what I really like about him is that he does not give a fuck. 'Fuck you! Fuck all of you! And she’s the Queen, so what? I’m Philip!'"

In interviews, Smith seems to be fond of the man he portrayed on TV, but his time as Prince Philip has come to an end. Showrunner Peter Morgan has famously recast the show for its third season, with Outlander and Game of Thrones alum Tobias Menzies stepping into Smith's shoes as the Duke of Edinburgh.

"I pass it on with a smile and a good luck. I’d rather be doing two years on something than seven. I think it’s very difficult to sustain seven years doing anything creatively and I think that’s one of the virtues of the show. If they get the six years right, you are going to get all these interpretations," he said.

"It’s a bit like playing Hamlet onstage. We’ll be completely forgotten about. [Laughs.] We’re over. We’ve done it. It’s all about Olivia Colman [who will play Queen Elizabeth] and Tobias Menzies now."

The Crown will return for its third season, with its entirely new cast, later this year.
