Gillian Anderson has shut down reports claiming that she had been lined up to return to The Crown for its sixth and final season.

The actress famously played Margaret Thatcher in season 4 of the Netflix Royal drama, which partly focused on the former Prime Minister's time in power in the 1980s.

A new report has emerged alleging that she had been lined up for a return in season 6 in a dinner scene with the late Queen and Prince Philip, though it is being claimed that writers had to alter scripts due to Anderson being unavailable.

The actress herself has now responded to the report, calling it "absolute bollocks" on Twitter.

While Anderson won't be returning to The Crown, the actress is lining up a starring role in another Netflix Royal drama, playing Emily Maitlis in new movie SCOOP.

The film is set to focus on the infamous Prince Andrew Newsnight interview in 2019, which preceded his withdrawal from public life.

It will also star Bodyguard's Keeley Hawes as the former private secretary Amanda Thirsk, Doctor Who's Billie Piper as Sam McAlister, the producer who secured the booking, and The Man in the High Castle's Rufus Sewell as Andrew.

Based on Sam McAlister's memoir Scoops: Behind The Scenes of the BBC's Most Shocking Interviews, the film will give viewers "the inside track of the women that broke through the Buckingham Palace establishment to secure the scoop of the decade that led to the catastrophic fall from grace of The Queen's 'favourite son'.

"From navigating Palace vetoes, to breaking through to Prince Andrew's inner circle, the high stakes negotiations and intensity of rehearsal – to the jaw-dropping interview itself," the synopsis adds.

"SCOOP is the insider account of the inner workings of the Palace and the BBC, twin bastions of the British Establishment, spotlighting the journalists whose tenacity and guts broke through the highest of ceilings – and into the inner sanctum and calculations of a man with everything to lose."

The Crown seasons 1-5 are streaming on Netflix. Seasons 1-4 are also available on DVD and Blu-ray.
