"Cruel Summer" Season 2 Confirmed at Freeform

Cruel Summer season 2 is officially a go at Freeform.

The series airs its season 1 finale tonight, June 15, but no matter what happens in the ongoing saga of Jeanette, Kate, and the small town of Skylin, Texas, there will be more to unpack in season 2, the network confirms. Cruel Summer is now Freeform's most-watched series ever, with 6.8 million viewers per episode; it airs next-day on Hulu, where it's become the most-watched next-day season 1 title from a linear channel in its first seven weeks.

All season long, we've watched the show's central mystery unfold. Told across three years in the mid ‘90s, we see the build-up and aftermath of Kate Wallis’s (Olivia Holt) kidnapping at the hands of her assistant principal Martin Harris — and the ramifications his actions have on her classmate Jeanette Turner (Chiara Aurelia), who Kate thinks saw her in his house and refused to help. It's a captivating thriller, unpacking ‘90s media perceptions, grooming, and the pressures young women face; plus, there are plenty of somber versions of iconic ’90s hits like “Wonderwall” and “Dreams.”

“We are so proud of this show and the incredible cast and crew who brought so much hard work and grit to every single scene," executive producers Jessica Biel and Michelle Purple of Iron Ocean Productions shared in a statement. “This wouldn’t have been possible without them and our mastermind showrunner, Tia Napolitano. To be picked up for a second season is a dream and we have so many ideas for where we can take this next. We are excited to get to work with our brilliant team of creatives on this project in addition to our partners at Freeform and eOne, including Jackie Sacerio who brought the project to us. To the audiences who have been tuning into this show week in and week out, THANK YOU!!! This is all for you!”

While we don't have many details for Cruel Summer season 2 yet, rest assured there will be plenty of mind-bending theories to unpack after the season 1 finale, “Hostile Witness,” airs on June 15th.
