Cruella stars recall seeing Emma Stone as Disney villain for the first time

Cruella stars Joel Fry and Paul Walter-Hauser recall thinking that "it just felt right" when they saw Emma Stone dressed as the iconic villain for the very first time.
Inspired by Dodie Smith's classic novel, and Disney's animated adaptation One Hundred and One Dalmatians, the movie takes place predominantly in 1970s London and tracks the black-and-white-haired baddie's transformation from ballsy whippersnapper Estella, to the wicked fashion icon known as Cruella de Vil.
"When I saw her put on the wardrobe and the costume, I was like, 'This is perfect,'" Walter-Hauser, who plays Horace, told Digital Spy ahead of its release.

"She's a pro. She's just one of those, like, 32-year-olds who feel like they have the wisdom of the aged, you know? Like she's been through way more than me and you can tell because she just knows how to handle everything," he continued.
"Even when it's difficult or there's a tough day... we're doing 10 takes of the same thing... Emma really stepped up and was a great leader on set and really was a great example for me and Joel."
Despite the La La Land actor channelling mean on set, Fry, who brings Jasper to life, insists that Stone couldn't be more different to her onscreen counterpart.
"She's cool, man. She's the kind of person you'd want to be your lead because she's just a genuinely good person," he said. "There's a lot of pressure on these people, fronting these kinds of things but she didn't show it if she felt under pressure."

Elsewhere in the interview, Fry touched on how Cruella expands the relationship between the titular character and Horace and Jasper, enabling the duo to be much more than just Cruella's hapless henchmen, as has been seen in previous iterations.
"They're really, like, actual friends in this film. That's the major difference," he explained. "In other versions, we've not really seen that other side of [Cruella] but it opens it up a bit in this. It has to!"
Directed by I, Tonya's Craig Gillespie, Cruella also features performances by Mark Strong (Shazam!), Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Killing Eve), Kayvan Novak (What We Do In The Shadows), Emily Beecham (The Pursuit of Love) and Emma Thompson, who plays Estella's ruthless rival Baroness von Hellman.
Cruella is out in cinemas and on Disney+ with Premier Access on May 28.
