New CTE equipment teaches students how to run a business

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) – Different schools in Greene County recently received grant money to purchase new Career Technical Education (CTE) equipment.

North Greene and Greeneville high schools are using that equipment to teach students how to start and run their own businesses.

“The kids are just starting from scratch. We show them how to come up with designs, we show them how to go and order the product, how to you create that product and then take the orders,” said Tanna Stansfield, CTE teacher at North Greene High School. “We show them how to create order forms, invoices, merchandizing, graphic design, etc.”

Students at North Greene are currently creating a new school store called Huskie Prints. Each student has a specific job within the business, some are creating shirts others are advertising products.

“They can see that it’s not just let’s go buy a t-shirt and make this, they have to know how to make money to continue that business,” Stansfield said. “We’ve got a lot of kids here who can one day be entrepreneurs and make and sell things in this community.”

Greeneville High School is also using its CTE equipment for a similar program to teach its students. The school has had a student store for years but students are running the counters and making products.

“They’re going to see firsthand, when you’re buying something from a wholesaler directly from somebody and making it in-house, the cost is definitely down,” said Cody Baugh, marketing and business teacher at Greeneville High. “They’re seeing how fast things can turn around.”

Greeneville High School senior Hank Hope said he works advertising for the student store, learning how to promote products.

“You design your own advertisement and kind of advertise when you’re bringing in a new shirt, new hoodie or anything that is new to the store,” Hope said.

Stansfield told News Channel 11 that she has plans to use the laser engraver they received from the grant to teach her students how to make different products.
