CU Boulder student, Centaurus High School graduate dies in Niwot Road crash

Jan. 8—A recent Centaurus High School graduate and University of Colorado Boulder student died Tuesday night in a crash on Niwot Road.

Ty Stroud, 18, of Lafayette was a passenger in a 2006 Corvette which was being driven by a 16-year-old, westbound on Niwot Road, just west of East County Line Road, according to Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Troy Kessler. At 11:59 p.m., the Lafayette driver hit a concrete barrier on the right side of the road. Kessler said a high rate of speed and alcohol are considered to be factors in the crash.

During the crash, Stroud's seatbelt was torn and he was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead on the scene, according to Kessler.

The driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital. No arrests have been made as the case remains under investigation.
