¡Cuba! exhibit opens at Exploreum in Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Cuba gets a closer look in Mobile starting this week. The Exploreum’s newest exhibit about the island nation opens later this morning. For much of the 20th Century, the relationship between the US and Cuba was fraught with political discord and a trade embargo–but this exhibit explores a lot more.

There are displays showing classic cars and high-end hand-rolled cigars. But this exhibit focuses on the whole culture of Cuba, its long history, and its rich ecology.

The Exploreum has been closed for a month as this exhibit was being installed–and finally reopens with ¡Cuba! Tuesday. This is trying to show the wide and varied world of Cuba.

“It gives people perspective in general. I think a lot of times it’s hard to even imagine something outside of our, you know, our day-to-day and what we’re used to. And so I hope just within that, it, you know, encourages people to see a world beyond mobile and to learn about it and to kind of pursue those scientific discoveries like they are on this island nation,” said Director of Education Savannah Holland.

The exhibit is bilingual–in Spanish and English. Mobile has close ties to Cuba–Mobile was the first US city to sign a sister city agreement with Havana more than 30 years ago.

The Exploreum exhibit will be open until late July 27th so there’s plenty of time to catch it for now–but once it closes it’s gone for good. It will officially retire after its Mobile run.
