The Sarasota Cuban Ballet School was recently awarded a $5,000 Capacity Building Grant by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.

In January, SCBS moved to a new home at 4740 Cattlemen Road on the Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida campus in Sarasota. Formerly the Gulfcoast Event and Conference Center, the building provides expansive space for student training and black box performances for the Sarasota community, but required a few modifications. With this grant, SCBS added an additional 132 feet to one of the studios.

The Capacity Building Grant expands the school’s ability to increase student enrollment, which in turn creates more funding for scholarships and expanded outreach to the community.

The project is funded by the Nancy Schneider Treib Memorial Fund and the Gus Lobenwein Memorial Fund of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.

The Sarasota Cuban Ballet School was founded by the Cuban-born husband and wife team of Ariel Serrano and Wilmian Hernández. Serrano and Hernández trained at the elite Escuela Nacional de Ballet de Cuba and performed internationally. As co-artistic directors, they offer classes at all levels for students from age 3 to adults. The heart of the school’s program is a rigorous training course to prepare talented young dancers for professional careers. SCBS celebrated its 10th anniversary in April.
