CUBED returns to Downtown Pensacola this weekend for live mural painting at City Hall

The city of Pensacola has announced its partnership with the Pensacola Museum of Art (PMA) to showcase a CUBED art installation at City Hall. The exhibit will feature live mural paintings from local artists, providing an opportunity for the public to view the artwork.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday at City Hall's John Sunday, Jr. Plaza, located at 222 W. Main St.

The city's cultural affairs program and PMA collaborated to add this satellite component to the CUBED installation, which is located at Museum Plaza behind the Pensacola Museum of History.

This year's event will feature the live painting of two cubes at the plaza by eight artists, along with a third cube hosted at City Hall where visitors can see the work of even more artists.

CUBED started in 2017 after Pensacola artists Evan Levin and Ashton Howard wrapped up a small public arts project — painting the massive mural spanning across the Jefferson Street Parking Garage as part of the Foo Foo Festival in 2016.

The duo wanted to know where they could go after the mural, so they decided to bring in a bunch of artists to do a similar concept. In 2017, the group took over the median on Palafox Street near Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza.

The concept has since expanded, creating multiple opportunities for local artists to paint live on three-dimensional 8-by-8 feet cubes in downtown Pensacola. Artists are selected through a Call For Artist process by the PMA.

CUBED at City Hall will showcase the artwork of local professional and student artists, including Nell Arnett, Lindsey Hampton and Sean Bush, Tianna Kuwica and Caroline Holland, and Angelica Tilton. The themes of the art will range from natural flora and fauna, mental health and more, using techniques and mediums such as painting, spray and wheat pasting.
