Cubs coach Mike Napoli tested positive for COVID-19 before reporting to summer camp

Chicago Cubs quality assurance coach Mike Napoli has not been with the team because he tested positive for the coronavirus.

Napoli, in his first season as a coach, learned of the positive test before the intake-screening process and hasn’t been with the team since summer workouts started three weeks ago.

Napoli, 38, gave the Cubs permission to reveal his status shortly after a reporter asked team President Theo Epstein about his absence during a conference call. At the time, Epstein declined to elaborate on Napoli’s absence.

Napoli is the second known Cubs coach to have tested positive for the coronavirus. Pitching coach Tommy Hottovy was quarantined for 30 days before summer workouts.

Napoli hit 267 home runs during 12 seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, Texas Rangers, Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians.
