'Cultura Tallahassee': Leon County celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month at library

Leon County Government celebrates the achievements and contributions of Hispanic Americans during Hispanic Heritage Month with an exhibit, book club, story times, and resources from the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System.

Thematic book lists and movie watchlists give citizens of all ages the opportunity to learn about the inspiring Hispanic American men and women who helped shape our community and the world.

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated each year from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.

In addition to these in-person and digital resources, citizens are encouraged to attend the County’s upcoming Hispanic Heritage Month events.

  • “Cultura Tallahassee: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage” Exhibit Opening, Thursday, Sept. 15 from 6-9 p.m., downtown Main Library – Kick off Hispanic Heritage Month at the opening of this new exhibit featuring artwork by more than 20 local artists. Light refreshments will be provided.

  •  “Cultura Tallahassee: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage” Exhibit, September 15-October 14, downtown Main Library – Celebrate Hispanic culture, heritage, and history with this exhibit featuring artwork by more than 20 local artists in a variety of mediums.

  • Adult Fiction/Nonfiction Book Club: “My Broken Language: A Memoir” by Quiara Alegría Hudes, Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom – Participate in an engaging discussion about the life of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Quiara Alegría Hudes while growing up in Philadelphia with her Puerto Rican family. Before the event, check out the book from the Leon County Public Library using your library card.

  • Preschool Story Time, Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 10:30 a.m., Eastside Branch Library – Designed for children ages three to six, this story time will feature songs, rhymes, and stories focused on Hispanic Heritage Month.

  • Baby Story Time, Friday, Oct. 7 at 10:30 a.m., Eastside Branch Library – Children up to the age of two can develop early literacy skills with songs, rhymes, and stories in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.

  • Library Lecture Series: “Así Se Baila: The Art of Flamenco Dancing,” Thursday, Oct. 13 at 6 p.m., downtown Main Library – Learn about the art and history of flamenco dancing with dancer Yvette “LaReina” Smith during this fun and informative event. Light refreshments will be provided.

  • Family Story Time, Saturday, Oct. 22 at 11 a.m., Dr. B.L. Perry, Jr. Branch Library – Families can enjoy songs, rhymes, and stories in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. This program is designed for caregivers and children ages five and younger, but all ages are welcome!
