'Here, it’s culture:' American International Market serves Indy community through food

Ammar Qaatabi believes in the power of grocery stores to build and serve communities.

That mission is at the center of American International Market, or AIM Mart at 86th Street and Ditch Road, of which Qaatabi is a co-owner. The store is a hub for international products, but what makes it unique is Qaatabi's commitment to acquiring anything customers request.

After nearly a year-long process and a soft opening on Nov. 17, AIM Mart is currently planning a grand opening for Dec. 17.

The store was originally supposed to open in May, but labor shortages, construction challenges and supply chain issues compounded to cause delays, Qaatabi said.

AIM Mart is in a former Marsh supermarket building and is owned by the 86th Street and Ditch Road Realty Company, according to property records. It will lease the space for 10 years with options, Qaatabi previously told IndyStar.

The store offers a variety of produce, fresh fish and meat, a designated kosher aisle, a halal meat section and rows and rows of spices — anise seeds, sumac, tarragon and masalas of every variety.

Wonderful smells permeate through the building, sweet or savory, depending on where you wander. There’s a kebab restaurant, an ice cream and gelato shop, and two bakeries — one Mediterranean, and one with American and Mexican pastries.

In addition to the wide range — and still growing — of international food products, AIM Mart also has a perfume and cologne counter, beauty supplies and cookware from all over the world. A pharmacy is also coming.

Qaatabi said he’s made a promise to customers that he will order any and every product community members request, no matter what it is or where it’s from — Korean Kabuto snacks, Egyptian cheese and more.

It’s been difficult at times to diversify his vendors — but he’s committed, and that accessibility is what will set AIM Mart apart.

“We are not familiar with most of them,” Qaatabi said. “But we (are) working hard to get every item that they desire here.”

Qaatabi is also a co-owner of Mecca Market on Indianapolis’ west side, which opened in 2015. He said the other store’s name leads people to think it’s just for Middle Eastern people, so the inclusive nature of AIM Mart is for everyone — regardless of their race, ethnicity or culture.

It's the type of store where hot and sweet chutney sits right next to Hidden Valley ranch dressing.

“This store is basically for everybody, for all Americans,” he said. “So hopefully, with this store, we can target all communities.”

Qaatabi said AIM Mart can bring people together through food. In strolling the aisles, he said, parents can teach their children about not only their own culinary traditions, but something new altogether.

“It’s not only grocery,” he said. “Here, it’s culture.”
