Cumberland County OKs proposal to build new parking deck in downtown Fayetteville

Cumberland County plans to build a new parking deck behind the courthouse in downtown Fayetteville that will address parking concerns related to the construction of the new Crown Event Center.

The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners approved a proposal to build the 1,100-parking spot, six-level deck on a portion of the existing parking lot behind the Judge E. Maurice Baswell Cumberland County Courthouse and the Cumberland County Law Enforcement Center, according to a news release from the county.

The parking deck will replace parking eliminated by the construction of the new Crown Event Center in front of the courthouse, which is currently a 203-parking spot lot, the release said. The new event center will replace the existing Crown Theatre and Arena, both of which must close by Oct. 31, 2025.

The deck will also include charging stations for electric vehicles. The estimated cost for the project is $33 million. Cumberland County Director of Engineering & Infrastructure Jermaine Walker said he expects the design phase to start in early 2024, with the structure completed by mid-2025.
