Cumberland County residents urged to conserve energy use as weather-related outages hit NC

Residents throughout North Carolina are experiencing cold weather-related power outages Saturday.

According to a statement on the Fayetteville Public Works Commission's website, PWC crews are responding as needed to outages in the area.

"You may have heard announcements of rolling black-outs from other utilities," according to the statement. "This is not PWC, but to help reduce the need for this, you can help by limiting electric use where possible to reduce the demand on the electric grid."

Duke Energy in a statement on its website is also asking customers to reduce their energy use for the next 24 hours, and in some counties is implementing rolling emergency power outages to help keep up with energy demand.

PWC provided the following tips to conserve energy:

• Turn down thermostats to 68 degrees or lower

• Reduce use of space heaters

• Postpone the use of dryers and dishwashers

• Unplug any nonessential lights and appliances

• Dress warmly

• Seal drafts if you feel air coming through windows or doors

• Draw the curtains and blinds
