Cumberland County Sheriff's Office finds body during search for missing kayaker

Aug. 31—The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office found a body in the water Wednesday in the area where a missing New Gloucester man was last seen.

The sheriff's office was searching for 34-year-old Seth Vosmus, who left his family home with a green kayak on Saturday and headed to Freeport. His truck was found in Freeport, but Vosmus and his kayak were not with it.

"It is believed he may have kayaked to one of the local islands," the sheriff's office said in a Facebook post.

The sheriff's office posted the update on Facebook and did not include any more details about where the body was found or what might have happened. The state medical examiner's office is working to identify the body.

A close friend posted about search efforts for Vosmus on Facebook and said his loved ones needed people to look for him on the water, beaches and islands. Joanna Forbes wrote that his truck was found at Porter's Landing in Freeport, and that he might have gone to Moshier Island or one of the other islands nearby.

She described him in her post: "Big smile, very charismatic, loving ... great dancer, loved by many." She also made a colorful joke about his singing talent or lack thereof, adding "(we forgive him)."

"Please send thoughts and prayers to Seth and his community," she wrote Monday. "We're worried sick."
