[NY GOVERNOR ANDREW CUOMO ON MARCH 3, 2021] "I wasn't elected by politicians, I was elected by the people of the state of New York,"

Powerful New York Democrats joined the call for New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to resign after a series of sexual misconduct allegations against him in recent weeks.

Democratic Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jerry Nadler along with other local political leaders on Friday insisted that the three-term governor step down.

A statement released by Ocasio-Cortez and Jamaal Bowman, a Congressman from New York, read in part (quote):

"This week, the second sexual assault allegation and the sixth harassment allegation was leveled against Governor Cuomo,"

Adding: "These allegations have all been consistent and highly-detailed, and there are also credible media reports substantiating their accounts..."

Their statement also notes the other scandal surrounding Cuomo -- his handling of data on nursing home deaths during the pandemic.

Cuomo on Friday did not step down, and once again denied the allegations against him -- adding that he would not be a victim to quote "cancel culture."

The new calls for his resignation come a day after New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie said he had authorized its Judiciary Committee to start an impeachment investigation into the six sexual misconduct allegations.

The panel's investigation will run parallel to one being led by state Attorney General Letitia James.

Cuomo has asked the public to await the results of that investigation before making any judgment.
