Mar. 10—WILLMAR — The 13th Annual Novice Bonspiel, hosted by Glacial Ridge Curling, will take place Friday and Saturday at the Blue Line facility at the Willmar Civic Center.

Competition will begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday. The bonspiel is free for the public to attend.

Thirty-two teams will compete, made up of four team members: two experienced curlers and two novice curlers with two years or less of experience.

Along with competitors across west central Minnesota, curlers from La Crosse, Wisconsin and Aberdeen, South Dakota are slated to compete in the two-day bonspiel, according to Ron Noyes, a member of GRC's board of directors.

To accommodate COVID-19 protocols, all curlers and spectators will be required to wear masks inside the Blue Line facility. GRC will also be cleaning surfaces used by multiple people, including curling stone handles between games.

The GRC, which was formed in the Willmar area in 2005, hosts two leagues on Wednesday nights and one on Thursday nights. The club is also fundraising for a dedicated curling facility adjacent to the Civic Center that will be fully funded by the club. The $2 million project was approved by the city of Willmar and the GRC in August 2018.
