The Curvy Statement Chair Is Having a Moment

If there's one thing I can count on, it's being both inspired and jealous by what I find on Sight Unseen. The online magazine has been a source for new and exciting designs and visual arts for the last decade and the annual exhibition, Offsite—which this year is exclusively online—is always a place brimming with incredibly fun new pieces. This is where the inspiration and jealousy come in: I love it all, I want it all, and I wish I'd found it myself. This year, the most delightful trend I'm fawning over is the curvy statement chair. From JUMBO's ultra-shiny aluminum chair to Cuff Studio's structural but soft rendition, you'll likely find your own favorite chair to fall in love with.

Be sure to browse the rest of Offsite Online, because it's full of nearly 100 designers, brands, and students who have made pieces worth daydreaming about or splurging on. The aim of the virtual fair, especially given the pandemic, is to provide support to designers in a time when they find themselves cut off from nearly all avenues for sales and promotion. While we all wish we could be checking out the design fairs IRL, the virtual browsing is a great distraction. I'm using all my imagination to feel myself sinking into these curvy chairs.

JUMBO

The pieces from JUMBO’s Creature Comfort collection make me feel a lot of things. I can't stop looking at the spun-aluminum Hero Lounge Chair—the hunter green beauty on the right. And even though the neoprene-upholstered, tennis-ball-inspired piece on the left is really more of a sofa than a chair, I'd definitely curl up in it solo.

Cuff Studio

In Cuff Studio's Common Ground collection, the Arc Armchair is pure delight with its swooping shape, which gives it a feminine and architectural appeal.

In the Connection Collection, Estudio Persona's amber-colored Block chair looks like an uppercase I when seen from above. Its sloped seat makes it a chair you could lounge in for hours.

Coil + Drift

The Talon Chair, upholstered in golden mohair, is one of those pieces that you and your housemates would probably fight over. Make sure you call dibs on this chair from Coil + Drift's Hone collection.

Seer Studio

This massively plush velvet piece by Seer Studio is called the Abby Chair—named after the founder's wife. I can only hope one day someone names such a statement seat after me.

Studio POA

It might not be obvious to think of a solid wood chair as sumptuous and curvy, but that's exactly how I'd describe the Santiago Chair 1 in all its blackened stained ash glory. This collection by Studio POA will make you marvel at what can be done with ceramic, glass, wood, and sand.

You might recognize the essence of these chairs from this rainbow-hued vacation rental. The Pieces team—Jenny Kaplan, Chris Corrado, and Taisha Coombs—designed their latest collection to feature more muted versions of their eye-catching designs. These Teddy chairs might just be my new best friends.

Jackrabbit Studio

Ahh, the chubby chair, I can't quit you. Jackrabbit Studio created a variation on a previous design in a very primary color palette—aptly, it's called the Primary Chubby Chair.

Atelier de Troupe

Atelier de Troupe’s Dérive d’Été collection is full of explorations of movement and the elements of the sea. What better way to ease into summer than with this Eclipse Chair? The swooping black chrome is so chic.

LikeMindedObjects

The designer behind LikeMindedObjects, Elise McMahon, is known for using recycled and sustainable materials to make furniture and this new Roll Chair is no exception. Made from bull denim, compressed paper, wood, shredded textile filling, and upholstery webbing, the chair sounds durable and looks like pure comfort.

Canadian studio Objects & Ideas was inspired by looping trails seen from planes at an air show for this collection. I love how they transformed that idea into the Mono Chair, which is made from sustainable wood.
