Some CVG flights from Fort Lauderdale canceled after severe rain shuts down airport

The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport has been temporarily shut down due to severe rain and flooding in the area.

The airport suspended all flights Wednesday afternoon through at least Thursday at noon, affecting more than 500 flights. The airport's roadways were shut down by flooding, and travelers were warned not to attempt to enter or leave the airport.

Fort Lauderdale was slammed with 25.95 inches of rainfall over the last two days, AccuWeather reported, and some areas received 20 inches of rain in six hours. The National Weather Service has a flood watch in effect throughout much of South Florida through Thursday night.
