CVG warns of flight delays, cancellations due to winter storm. How to stay up-to-date

As Greater Cincinnati braces for dangerously cold wind chills and snow, the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is warning of possible flight delays or cancellations going into the holiday weekend.

With a major winter storm moving through Central and Eastern U.S., holiday travelers are facing a slew of travel woes. More than 4,228 U.S. flights were canceled and nearly 4,925 were delayed Friday as of 1:05 p.m., according to the flight-tracking website FlightAware.

In Greater Cincinnati, snow reports into the National Weather Service range between 2 to 4 inches. These numbers were not final snowfall totals. Forecasters have warned wind gusts as high as 45 mph and wind chills as low as 30 degrees below zero.

"We are back to pre-pandemic levels for this holiday travel season," CVG spokesperson Mindy Kershner told The Enquirer. Over the span of just two weeks, which began last Friday and ends Jan. 2, an estimated 400,000 travelers will have ventured into and out of CVG for the holidays.

As of 1:05 p.m. on Friday, CVG had a total 51 cancellations and 59 delays, according to FlightAware.

Winter operations crews will begin working Thursday evening to clear the airport's roads and runways, Kershner said, adding that travelers are recommended to visit CVG's website to check their flight status.

She said holiday travelers should also download their airline's app to get real-time updates sent directly to their phone.

With driving conditions expected to be hazardous, as rain will change to snow coinciding with the rapid drop in temps, Kershner said it's also important travelers keep an eye on the roads to ensure they can make it to the airport on time.
