WDFW reports the cougar “latched onto” a female cyclist.

Incredibly, the other cyclists fought it off.

“They were able to pin down a good size lion with its claws and teeth and everything else under a mountain bike until we arrived,” Sgt. Carlo Pace with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife police told KOMO-TV.

“We may have had a very different outcome without their heroic efforts,” said Lieutenant Erik Olson.

The woman has since been released from the hospital.

Fish and Wildlife officers removed a young male 75-pound cougar at the scene.

Witnesses reported seeing a second cougar run through the scene, but wildlife officers said they saw no sign of a second cougar after an exhaustive search.

Fish and Wildlife reports cougar attacks are extremely rare.
