How cyclists can score free bus, train rides this week

Cyclists can ride Metrolink trains for free this week in celebration of Bike Week.

The Southern California passenger rail service is providing complimentary rides across its entire system to anyone who boards with a bicycle from Monday through this Friday.

Metrolink has also created a list of the 14 best biking paths that are easily accessible from a nearby Metrolink station, which it says are “perfect for cycling enthusiasts seeking inspiration.”

Metrolink has a service line of more than 540 miles with 67 stations across L.A., Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura and San Diego counties. The Metrolink Arrow service provides nine miles of connectivity between San Bernardino and Redlands.

“Bike Week provides an excellent opportunity for riders to experience the convenience and eco-friendly benefits of combining biking with public transit,” said Metrolink Board Chair and City of Highland Mayor Pro Tem Larry McCallon. “During Bike Week, we invite everyone to bring their bike and take any Metrolink or Arrow train for work or play, free for the entire week.”

Metrolink is just one of the Southern California transit services celebrating Bike Week by offering free rides to cyclists.

On Thursday, LA Metro will provide free rides to all riders on all Metro bus and rail lines. The Metro Bike Share is also offering free 30-minute rides with the use of a promo code.

Ventura County cyclists can ride for free on any bus operated by the Ventura County Transportation Commission on Friday.

A bike rally and four-mile group ride hosted by the Orange County Transportation Authority will be held Wednesday at the Orange Metrolink Station.

All these events are being hosted as part of National Bike Month, which is observed every May and has been promoted by the League of American Bicyclists since it was first established in 1956.

This year, May 13 through May 17 is officially recognized as “Bike to Work Week.”
