Czech fans of antique bicycles show off their skills

STORY: Dressed in historical costume, cyclists rode in formation accompanied to music or took part in races - either competing to be the fastest or to go slow and keep their balance.

"We come just for fun, we wear those historical clothes and we ride," said 63-year-old cyclist Jaroslav Kotrba.

The event was organized by the 'Czech Velocipedist Club' which said on its website the first bicycle ride took place in what is now the Czech Republic in 1868.

Penny-farthings, a model of bicycle with one large and one small wheel, were invented around 1870 and were popular until models with two evenly-sized wheels and chains were developed in the 1880s. Most bicycles today are based on this design.
