Czech Foreign Ministry to create special department to deal with sanctions against Russia

However, Lipavsky did not specify when exactly Prague plans to introduce its own sanctions against Russians and Russian companies. Lipavsky also underscored that the lists compiled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had to be approved by the government.

The minister said that a law recently adopted in Czechia will allow sanctions to be applied at the national level to persons who are not included in EU sanctions lists. They will be banned from entering the Czech Republic, and their assets will be frozen.

Lipavsky said that the document will apply primarily to entities from the Russian Federation and Belarus responsible for the war in Ukraine.

The European Union agreed to a ninth package of sanctions against Russia due to its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Dec. 16. The sanctions focus on technology, finance and the media.

Almost 200 individuals and legal entities were added to the list of sanctions. Sanctions were introduced against three more Russian banks, as well as against four Russian propaganda TV channels.

The new sanctions will also affect the Russian energy and mining sectors.
