After the repairs and upgrades, the tanks will be sent back to the battlefields in Ukraine.

The work will be done in the city of Nový Jičín, on the basis of a memorandum signed between VOP CZ, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Czech Ministry of Defense, and the Ukrainian defense industry conglomerate Ukroboronprom.

Marek Špok, the director of VOP CZ, said that the Ukrainian tanks have been in storage for decades, necessitating their complete disassembly and the replacement of certain parts in order to restore their combat capability.

“Overall, the modernization will be carried out under the technical supervision of Ukrainian experts with their direct participation, Špok said. “The tanks will be equipped with optical observation systems, improved communications, and more.”

He further mentioned that his company’s employees have visited Ukrainian Ukroboronprom facilities in recent weeks to establish mutual cooperation.

Jana Černochová, the Czech defense minister, said that her country would continue to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.

“We’ve provided surplus military equipment, trained Ukrainian soldiers, and now we’re assisting in the repair of Ukrainian equipment,” she said.

“We can offer our knowledge and skills for training and repairs, while also gaining invaluable combat experience from the Ukrainians.”

Yuriy Husev, CEO of Ukroboronprom, noted that the defense cooperation between Ukraine and the Czech Republic encompasses the production of military equipment and ammunition of various calibers, the development of service centers for the maintenance and repair of anti-aircraft weapons, as well as the establishment of a joint scientific research center.
