D’Bronx pizza closed this Kansas City location last year. Here’s what’s moving in

When Genghis Khan Mongolian Grill closed last week, it marked the end of an era on West 39th Street. Three longtime restaurants clustered on the southwest corner of 39th and Bell streets — Genghis Khan, d’Bronx Authentic Deli and Pizzeria and Blue Koi — have all closed in the past few years.

Two of those spaces are on the market, but a new tenant recently signed a lease for the d’Bronx space. The owners of The Fresh Mediterranean Co. in Lawrence plan to open a concept at 3904 Bell next year.

“It’ll be the same menu we have in Lawrence, but most likely we will have a different name,” said owner Hanif Lakhani.

The Lawrence location operates inside a Cenex gas station at 1000 W. 23rd St., serving chicken shawarma, falafel, hummus, gyros and other Middle Eastern fare. Lakhani told the Lawrence Times earlier this year that he planned to expand Fresh Mediterranean into a ”full-blown fast-casual restaurant,” similar to Chipotle.

Lakhani said he expects the 39th Street location to open sometime in the spring.

“There’s a lot of work to do in there,” he said. “It hasn’t really been upgraded in 20 years, so we need to get it ready for the next 20 years.”
