Déjà vu? Shelby County Clerk’s Office again turns away taxpayers ahead of weeklong closure

Same story, different day.

Taxpayers say they were once again turned away from the Shelby County Clerk’s Office on Mullins Station on the Friday before a weeklong closure of the office.

“I have been trying to renew tags since the end of June,” said Shannon Steele, a Shelby County taxpayer. “I have been here five times. Due to my work hours, I’m limited to when I can come. So, I actually took off today.”

Steele told FOX13 that she had to leave line for a doctor’s appointment. When she returned, the office was closed an hour early.

“I pay my taxes just like everybody else,” Steele said. “It shouldn’t be this difficult.”

Monday, September 19th marks the start of a weeklong closure while the office works to “catch up” on the backlog of license plates. The last weeklong closure was August 22nd through 26th.

Exactly a month ago, on Friday, August 19th, two dozen people in line were also turned away from the office.

Kayla Tinnon told FOX13 she asked to get off work early so she could wait in line ahead of the closure.

“I expected there to be a line,” Tinnon said. “I expected to be there past 5:15 p.m. I get here, there’s multiple people outside and the offices are closed early. There’s no communication.”

Eli Duberow brought a lawn chair and an umbrella to wait. He said it took four hours to get his license plate.

“It’s just kind of a little bit insufferable conditions having to wait in line and outside so long,” Duberow said.

FOX13 reached out to County Clerk Wanda Halbert again on Friday evening to ask why the office closed early again. As of 8:30 p.m., she had not responded.
