D.L. Hughley On Mo'Nique Situation: 'Saying Yes To Her Is An Occupational Hazard,' Asks How His Dog And Wife Were Related To Her Contract

DL Hughley has taken Mo'Nique to task even more for her accusation that Hughley didn't want her to be the headliner at a recent Detroit comedy lineup.

On his radio show, Hughley lit into what Mo'Nique said which included making homophobic statements about his relationship and his name (using his initials to reference "dl" or "down low" men) during her set as she asserted that Hughley threw a fit at her being the headliner for the show.

He said that he realized he made the same mistake others who have faced Mo'Nique's ire made--that mistake being to give her a chance.

“I’d been offered a couple of gigs to work with Mo’Nique in LA, in Houston, and in Brooklyn, and I turned them down because I didn’t think it would work. So, after talking to a lot of people…about how things are different and things are coming around, I decided it would be wrong for me not to give somebody a chance based on things that they’ve never done to me.”

He said that what she said on stage was a different narrative--her reference to him being at her table was by her invitation to a party she threw to celebrate a Pay-Per-View fight.

In her on-stage routine, she said talked about having Hughley at her table as a way to suggest that he backstabbed her after pretending to be nice to her. Hughley said that he had a “wonderful” time at the party, which figured partly into why he decided to work with her.

"Now I know what Tyler Perry knows, I know what Lee Daniels knows, I know what Oprah knows, I know what Steve Harvey knows, I know what Charlamagne tha God knows, I know what Netflix knows. Saying 'yes' to Mo'Nique is an occupational hazard," he said.

Hughley alleged that Mo’Nique purposely came minutes before she was supposed to perform in an attempt to force the lineup to change.

“She was supposed to be there at 8:40, she had just got there at 8:38,” he said. “What Mo’Nique was trying to do was slow up the show. She ended up [not] getting on for 30 minutes. The oldest trick in the world is if I want to change the order and I don’t have merit, I’ll try to make people wait so long that everybody gets so nervous and go, ‘Please, will you just go on so we can avoid a conflict.'”

"If Mo'Nique actually felt like she had merit, she would have done one of three things," he said.

“She would have taken it up with the promoter…you would have not done it, but she knew she had to get on stage because she would be in breach of contract, or she would have come to talk to me,” he continued. “But she did not ever–and I empathically empathize this–she never once talked to me. I have not seen Mo’Nique in years. I didn’t see her at the venue before, after, or during.”

Hughley also addressed the myriad of insults Mo'Nique flung at him on stage, which included jokes about his emotional support dog, his wife, and, of course, racial insults regarding him and the other people Mo'Nique has gripes with, including Steve Harvey, Lee Daniels and Oprah.

“…What did any of that have to do with an alleged contract dispute? What does Steve Harvey have to do with your contract? What did I have to do with your contract? What did my dog have to do with your contract? What did my wife have to do with your contract? You wrote your contract, you and your daddy,” he said, referring to Mo’Nique’s husband Sidney Hicks, whom she often calls “Daddy” in her YouTube videos.

He revealed that his dog is actually a way he and his family have coped with his father's death. As he said on his radio show, he named the dog after his father and travels with him so he can feel like he always has his father near him.

“When you burn things up, and you sit back to watch the results of them…you sat back and you tried to watch your damage…You know who does that? Arsonists do that,” he said. “When you burn and you destroy and wreck, you are not a queen of comedy, you are a queen of ashes. I’m going to go back to work, and you get back to your kingdom of smoke.”
