DA: Fatal Brockton shooting happened at large Fourth of July gathering

BROCKTON − The fatal shooting on Tremont Street early Wednesday morning occurred at a large Fourth of July gathering with over 100 people and left one man dead, two women injured and at least six vehicles damaged, officials said.

Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz's office said Wednesday afternoon that investigators have conducted interviews and reviewed surveillance video to determine what led to the shooting death of Thomas Andrade Jr., 31, of Brockton.

"Investigators have determined that a large-scale, outside gathering of more than 100 people was ongoing in the area throughout the hours leading up to the time of the shooting," the DA's office said. "This gathering included the consumption of alcohol, and the execution of dozens of fireworks. At least six or more motor vehicles were struck by gunfire, and investigators seized numerous pieces of ballistic and spent firework evidence at the scene."

ShotSpotter, the city's electronic gunfire detection system, alerted police to gunfire in the area of Tremont and Essex streets at 1:48 a.m. Wednesday. Police also received several 911 calls reporting a shooting.

"Upon arrival, police learned that three people, one male and two females, had been shot and transported to Good Samaritan Hospital, either by ambulance or motor vehicle," the DA's office said.

The male victim, later identified as Andrade, was pronounced dead at the hospital at 2:42 a.m.

"The two female shooting victims were treated for non life-threatening injuries," the DA's office said.

Cruz's office said the investigation remains active and ongoing, but that, preliminarily, "this does not appear to be a random act of violence."

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
