DA: Lawrence man convicted for murder after beating man to death with baseball bat

A Lawrence man was convicted of first-degree murder for beating his neighbor to death with a baseball bat in 2017, the Essex County District Attorney’s office announced Wednesday.

The DA’s office says Martin Rodriguez, 67, planned the deadly attack upon 53-year-old Jose Burgos. The two men lived in a YMCA rooming house, according to Essex District Attorney Paul Tucker.

A Lawrence Superior Court jury found the murder was “committed with premeditation, as well as extreme atrocity and cruelty.”

“This was a brutal crime and I’m pleased the jury considered all of the evidence before delivering a just verdict,” Tucker said. “I’m also impressed with the professionalism and dedication of our team from top to bottom.”

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 27.
