DA: Man who killed stepfather in Bristol Township home had 'hit list' of family members, grudge over inheritance

A man is accused of killing his stepfather in Bristol Township after he had ongoing issues with him, according to authorities.

On Friday, Brian James Carey, 41, was arraigned on charges alleging he killed Joseph Michael Jakimowicz, 78, earlier this week.

The Bucks County District Attorney's Office said in a news release that Jakimowicz was found dead in his Winder Drive home Tuesday night. Jakimowicz had been stabbed to death.

Carey was taken into custody late Wednesday on drug charges. After testing blood Carey had on his clothing, and reviewing nearby surveillance footage, Bristol Township police and Bucks County Detectives were able to charge him in the homicide Friday, according to court documents.

He is charged with homicide, theft and receiving stolen property, which are felonies, as well as misdemeanors of stalking, possessing an instrument of crime and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. He remains jailed without bail.

Jakimowicz was found by a family member, dead and stabbed multiple times, Tuesday night, according to court documents.

Detectives found that Carey, who was estranged from his stepfather, believed Jakimowicz killed his mother and stole his inheritance, police said. His mother died a few years ago.

Carey had been threatening to kill Jakimowicz and other family members, according to authorities.

Carey had a "hit list," of family members he wanted to kill, court documents allege. Jakimowicz was on the alleged list.

He had recently texted threats and left threatening voicemails for Jakimowicz, police said.

Detectives viewed nearby surveillance footage, which showed a man that appeared to be Carey, get off a bus and enter Jakimowicz's home about 2:15 p.m. Monday, police said.

He was seen leaving the home about 20 minutes later in Jakimowicz's 2006 Chevy Trailblazer, court documents state. Jakimowicz was found by a family member about 7:15 p.m. the next day.

Carey was arrested in Trumbauersville on Wednesday.

When police took him into custody, he was found with five knives and a large amount of money, according to police. Investigators believe the money was taken from Jakimowicz's home.

Carey was found with debris under his fingernails, dried blood around his cuticles and what appeared to be red, dried blood stands on the cuffs of his hoodie, police said.

Blood spatter was also found on his sweatpants, court documents state.

Detectives tested the blood found on his sweatpants and found that it genetically matched the DNA profile of Jakimowicz, according to police.

Bensalem police's local DNA database helped investigators find the match.

Carey was a "person of interest," on Wednesday after Jakimowicz was found dead. Jakimowicz' vehicle was found in Philadelphia later Wednesday.

His preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled for March 2. He did not have an attorney listed for him Friday.
